We were delighted to receive of a copy of Andrew Baker's new book, 'Cake, a slice of British Life' published on 28th September by Mudlark, an imprint of HarperCollins publishers in the UK.
Andrew's book is a delghtful read as he takes on the challenge of finding out the stories behind some of the UK's iconic cake and goes on quests to eat each one in a relevant location, which takes him all over the country, including trips to Dundee, York & Eccles. He also discovers that the late Queen's favourite cake was chocolate biscuit cake made with Rich Tea biscuits and this is where we come in, as we make our biscuit cake with rich tea biscuits too.
Andrew's book is enlightening, entertaining and has some laugh out loud moments as he describes his cake quests. He takes a slice of our biscuit cake to Windsor Castle to find somewhere suitably appropriate to eat it....to say anymore would be a spoiler!
Prue Leith describes the book as 'A delightful odyssey through the history, nostalgia, fascination and British love of cake. Quirky, charming & fun' and we would quite agree with her. John Whaite of early Bake Off fame, says it is 'a book that offers insight with laughter and history with a tummy rumble. Nothing short of delicious'
Alongside the recipe for our biscuit cake are recipes for Eccles cakes, Dundee cakes, Yorkshire parkin, Victoria sandwiches, Battenburgs and more, all provided by some very well known bakers and brands. We are in very esteemed company and are thrilled to bits that we have been included!
'Cake' is available in all major book retailers (you can buy a copy from Waterstones, Foyles or WHSmiths) and we think it would make a marvellous gift for a baking fan. You can also buy our chocolate biscuits in a large log form online here or in our four chocolate house cafes as slices (as in the photo), perfect with a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate!
