To celebrate opening our new shop in Winchester, we thought it would be huge fun to honour Winchester's most famous resident...King Alfred (known as Alf to locals & his friends).
We are delighted that the Financial Times tasting panel deemed it the winner of their fun chocolate coins taste test published on Nov 29th 2014. The tasting panel described it as:
"slightly salty and nutty", "more creamy than the others", "good mouthfeel" & "long live good King Alfred!"
There is a very large statue of King Alf near our shop at the bottom of Winchester High Street and there was much excitement recently when they hoped to identify bones as belonging to his Highness (they got as far as a possible pelvic bone).
So we teamed up with local graphic designer James of Peagreen Design agency based in Winchester, who very kindly adapted his groovy print of King Alf so that we could turn him into a chocolate coin & here he is!
The coins have been made for us in the Netherlands as we don't have the machinery in-house to do this, but the chocolate quality is good & contains no added vegetable fats.
King Alf also has a Swanage connection...according to local legend, he defeated the invading Danes in a big sea battle in 877AD - so it was clearly fate that took us to Winchester as our first location outside of Swanage!
