Our Ingredients

Global Goodies

Our ethical approach goes beyond just chocolate. We take great pride in working with suppliers to source as many ethically produced ingredients as we can, including:

Raisins

Via Traidcraft from SAD, a farmer owned co-operative in the Orange River areas of South Africa. The fair trade premium goes to the Eksteenskuil Farmers Association, to help small-scale farmers benefit from growing grapes.

Coffee Beans

Organically grown fairtrade mangoes

Via Tropical Wholefoods from Burkina Faso. They import the fruit from "Association Ton", a farmers cooperative teaching its 2800 members improved farming practices, re-afforestation & organic agriculture, as well as sponsoring literacy and general education.

Cafedirect coffee

One of the best known names in fairtrade coffee and inside our 2006 Gold Great Taste Award winning Espresso chocolate!

Organically grown cocoa powder

From the Conacado co-operative on the island of Hispaniola in the Dominican Republic. The farmers of the co-operative organically cultivate this cocoa on small hill farms, helping to preserve the canopy of the tropical rainforest.

Organically grown raw cane sugar

From farmers of the Asociacion Agricola Canera del Sur, Iturbe in Paraguay. The small-scale farmers of this democratic association benefit from the value added in processing sugar as well as selling their raw material. Their association gains strength from receiving a higher and more secure income, enabling them to improve local medical facilities & infrastructure. We use this sugar to make our Granny's Tablet (Scottish style fudge).

Why do we bother sourcing ethically produced ingredients?

Raw Cane Sugar

Because we care about the bigger picture. At the risk of stating the obvious, food is grown, nurtured and harvested by people. We want to play our part in supporting the small scale producers out there who are often struggling to compete in the global trade games being played predominantly by the industrialised world. It's about a lot more than removing slavery, it's about paying small scale producers a fair price for the quality food they produce (which we take for granted), & helping enable them to build a sustainable, better future.

A Utopian & naive ideal? Like any economic or political initiative, it has its flaws & critics, but overall, it has to be making a positive difference to the lives of the small scale producers of the ingredients we are using. It's a start & from small steps....

As a final note on this subject, a thought-provoking comment from Mr Ohemeng, chief of the Kuapa Kokoo Cocoa co-operative in Ghana:

"We all have to go shopping, and Fairtrade is just about going shopping with a bit of respect"
